Pascal Bisek knows the exact moment things go sideways.

They’re making their approach on the back of the cabin when that shitty canoe or boat they never had the chance to properly check suddenly flips over to reveal a hidey-hole and a young girl . . . who the hell is that . . . but even more importantly, their target, Mia Rade, all done up in hiking gear, carrying a hunting rifle.

He’s about to swap out the flash-bang and tag the Rade woman with 20 ccs of surgical anesthesia—a potent cocktail of propofol, ketamine, and dexmedetomidine—when Rade starts shooting wildly at them, and the girl . . . still don’t know who she is . . . starts screaming holy hell, and his nose starts bleeding.

Not bleeding. Gushing.

That’s when things go sideways . . .

Like he got hit in the head with a claw hammer, claw end first.

Like his forehead is being split open and someone is pouring fire behind his eyes, or worse, a flock of flaming birds, crows, or ravens, scratching at the inside of his skull.

The girl’s screaming is a thousand burning bird wings.

Then Bisek is all of twelve again, and awful Uncle Stepan is leaning over his bed whispering, you got this comin’ . . . and Bisek, both then and now, can only cry and agree i am a bad person . . . i’ve done so many bad things . . .

And although he’s willing to do about anything to make this horror show stop, up to and including shooting himself in the head, he groans and cries and shoots his partner, Rico Tancredi, in the heart first.
